4 Mindset Shifts to Transform Your Side Hustle into a Full-Time Career

Changing Your Mindset | 5 Actionable Tips for Mindset Shifts

Thinking about making your side hustle a full-time gig? Transitioning to self-employment or becoming a small business owner can be daunting due to the many unknowns. However, if you’re serious about taking your side hustle full-time, a crucial step is to adjust your mindset.

In 2016, I left my 9-to-5 job to freelance full-time after 18 months of side hustling. While money and organization were significant factors, mindset played a key role. Your thoughts and attitudes directly impact your actions, making it essential to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset early on. Here are four mindset shifts to consider as you grow your side hustle into your main source of income.

MY CONCEPT IS ALREADY PROVEN

Feeling apprehensive about taking your side hustle full-time? Remember, if you’re even considering this step, your concept is already proven. Many people start side hustles without seeing any substantial earnings, so if you’re finding success part-time, that’s a positive sign. It means your idea has potential for even greater success when you dedicate full-time effort to it.

Testing your concept as a side hustle first is highly recommended. It gives you time to learn the ropes and validate your idea. When I began freelance writing, I quickly exceeded my full-time job’s earnings, showing me that with 40 hours a week dedicated to it, I could achieve even more.

I WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN LESSONS REGARDLESS

One of the biggest fears in taking a side hustle full-time is the possibility of failure. Understand that all entrepreneurs make mistakes and face setbacks. Don’t see these as failures but as valuable lessons and stepping stones to refine your approach and improve.

Prepare for obstacles by having backup plans and ensuring your finances are secure. Create a buffer in your checking account for unexpected business expenses and beef up your emergency savings to cushion against mistakes or slow periods.

UNDERSTAND THAT VALUE CREATES MONEY, NOT TIME

Shifting from an employee to an entrepreneur mindset means changing how you view money. Many of us grew up learning to trade time for money, but as an entrepreneur, you’ll find that people pay for the value and expertise you offer, not the time spent.

For example, when you buy a car, you care more about its features and the value it provides than how long it took to build. Similarly, prioritize creating valuable products or services to get paid, rather than focusing solely on the time invested.

I DON’T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING AND CAN CONTINUALLY SEEK HELP

The terms “solopreneur” or “entrepreneur” can be intimidating, but going full-time with your side hustle doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Join a mastermind or support group to connect with others in similar situations, encouraging and learning from each other.

Engage with a credible accountant, invest in coaching, and network with experts. Even with a limited budget, you don’t have to tackle everything solo. Continually seek help and remain open to learning and growing along the way.

SUMMARY: TAKE YOUR SIDE HUSTLE FULL-TIME WITH THE RIGHT MINDSET

Mindset is crucial when embarking on the journey of starting your own business or freelancing full-time. Adopt these necessary mindset shifts early on to prepare yourself for the challenges ahead. Be open to the journey, set realistic expectations, plan your finances carefully, and establish a support system to make the transition smoother and increase your chances of success.
